Where do I actually meet the car?

In the arrival area, after baggage reclaim. A contact phone number with the correct country code is given at booking. The rental terms require that number to be reachable on the day before pick-up and throughout the rental. Service quality claims are not accepted if the renter could not be contacted by mobile phone or by Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. Tenerife South Airport has a single terminal, and the arrival area is the named handover place in the booking system.

The time between landing and driving away includes baggage reclaim and the handover. If a flight is delayed, the phone number on the booking is the contact the rental terms require. The handover place is the arrival area, and there is no rental desk, counter, office or numbered bay in the terminal.

What do I need to have with me?

The main driver needs the licence card itself: a valid national licence in the driver's name, with its details in Latin script and an expiry date no earlier than the end of the rental. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. If a licence is only valid in the country that issued it, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended and may be requested. A United Kingdom photocard licence has its details in Latin script. The minimum age and driving experience for each car are listed on its page, and the agent may refuse a driver who does not meet them.

Renting may require a physical, embossed credit card in the main driver's name. A card held on a phone or a card in another person's name does not meet that condition. Some rental companies accept a debit card; it must also be a physical, personalised card with embossed details, issued in the main driver's name. Whether a credit card is required or a debit card is accepted is specified during booking and on your voucher. The card must be with you at pick-up. The wrong card is the most common reason a pick-up fails.

The booking and the voucher show how the remaining rental cost is paid, how the deposit is held and how long the refund takes. The search listing also shows the deposit amount and whether the deposit can be paid in cash. The deposit is separate from damage cover. Damage cover depends on the cover level chosen for the car, and standard insurance excludes the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior. The excess is not shown in the search results. Each cover level is priced separately on the listing.

Getting out of the airport, and the first twenty minutes

The airport is beside the TF-1 motorway, which runs west to the Adeje junction at La Caleta and north-east to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where it meets the TF-5. Tenerife has no toll roads. Fuel, parking and fines are the renter's responsibility under the rental terms. The DGT operates fixed speed cameras on the TF-1 and the TF-5, including an average-speed pair. Every hire car on the island is Spanish-registered and must carry an approved, connected V-16 beacon, which replaced warning triangles on 1 January 2026. The beacon is a small orange roof light that reports its position to the DGT. The fine for not carrying an approved beacon is 80 euros.

P1 is the one general car park at the terminal. It is a few metres from the building and open 24 hours, and its covered spaces have 2.2 metres of headroom. For fuel, the Repsol station on the airport access road is about 400 metres from the terminal and open 24 hours. A BP station at Carretera Atogo km 0.5, on the TF-1 about 1.5 kilometres north, is also open 24 hours. The car goes back with the fuel level it had at pick-up. If the level is lower, you pay the difference at the rental company's rates; if it is higher, you are not compensated for the difference.

El Medano is the nearest town, eighteen minutes and 6 kilometres from the terminal by road. Every route in or out of the airport includes the access road and the terminal approach at low speed. Car hire in El Medano is delivered to the address you give in the town, which has no named pick-up point; the TGAS station on the TF-64 at km 7.7 is open 24 hours. Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje are thirty minutes from the terminal, Los Cristianos thirty-three and Playa Paraiso thirty-seven. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is fifty-nine minutes away, and the Parador in the Teide crater is sixty-two. Golf del Sur is twenty-two minutes and 7 kilometres from the terminal, and car hire in Golf del Sur is delivered to an address there and returned there, because Golf del Sur is a collection-only point.

How far is everything from the terminal

The table lists drive times and distances from the terminal. These are estimates that leave out traffic; check a live map on the day. The Parador in the Teide crater is 49 kilometres by the TF-21 through Vilaflor and takes sixty-two minutes. Vilaflor is the highest municipality in the Canary Islands, at about 1,400 metres. El Portillo, the northern approach to Teide, is seventy-six minutes and 63 kilometres. There is no fuel station inside Teide National Park. The Teide cable car base station is at km 43 of the TF-21, at 2,356 metres. Its top station, La Rambleta, is at 3,555 metres, and the summit of Teide is at 3,715 metres.

Do I have to bring it back here?

No. A rental can start at Tenerife South Airport and end somewhere else, and any one-way charge is shown with the price on each car. Nearly every pick-up point on the island can be chosen as a drop-off as well as a collection; Golf del Sur and Guía de Isora are the exceptions and can be chosen for collection only. The widest choice of one-way cars on the island is between this airport and Tenerife North, in both directions, and after it comes a drop-off at one of the southern resorts, with Playa de las Americas first. Flights at Tenerife North are mostly domestic, and close to half are inter-island connections. The drive from Tenerife South Airport to Tenerife North Airport is sixty-five minutes and 73 kilometres.

The minimum chargeable period is twenty-four hours, so a car for a morning is charged as a full day. To extend the rental, inform the rental agent in advance. If the car is returned so dirty that its inspection is hindered, it is washed at your expense. Fuel, parking and fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility. Only small pets may travel in the car, kept in their travel carriers at all times.

Which car suits the roads out of here

The covered spaces at the airport car park have 2.2 metres of headroom, as does the covered car park on Calle Valle Menendez in Los Cristianos; the El Mirador car park in Los Gigantes has a 2.10 metre limit. The Fiat 500, Kia Picanto and Toyota Aygo X are economy models with four seats, and economy models at Tenerife South Airport have manual gearboxes. Economy is the cheap end of the list. Lower-priced cars were absent from the Christmas-week and mid-February listings.

Automatics are a minority of the cars listed at the airport. They sit in the compact, crossover and SUV classes, in models such as the Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai Bayon and SEAT Ateca. Hire cars may travel only on paved public roads, which excludes the unpaved tracks in Teno and parts of Anaga, and standard insurance does not cover damage to the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen or interior. The TF-436 to Masca has narrow sections. While a fire-risk alert is declared, vehicles driven by visitors for recreation are refused on the TF-436 between 09:00 and 16:00, and the control has no announced end date. Driving in the south of Tenerife, as anywhere on the island, requires every hire car to carry an approved, connected V-16 beacon.
