Which one-way routes actually have cars?

The airport pair is the deep one, by a distance. Between Tenerife South and Tenerife North the choice is several times wider than for any resort pairing, in both directions, so if you are landing in the south and flying home from Los Rodeos, or the other way round, you will barely notice the list narrowing at all. The search shows what is actually there for your dates, which is the only number worth having. At the far end, Tenerife North Airport car hire is handed over in the arrival area exactly as it is in the south.

After that it thins roughly with the size of the place: the southern strip and Puerto de la Cruz carry solid one-way supply, and the smallest points carry least. That is a pattern rather than a rule, and the honest way to check it is the search itself, which shows the cars for your dates and your pairing rather than for a generic week.

Golf del Sur and Guía de Isora carry same-place cars and none at all one-way, so they are offered as places to collect a car and not as places to leave one. That is why the drop-off list is shorter than the pick-up list.

The three trips this actually suits

The two-centre holiday is the obvious one. If your trip is a week in the south and a few days in the north, doing it with one car that stays with you the whole time, rather than two rentals or a long backtrack, is what a one-way is for. Starting at the south airport and ending elsewhere also means the car carries the luggage across the mountain instead of you carrying it onto a bus. The long crossing to the north coast is eighty-one minutes from the southern terminal, and a one-way means driving it once instead of out at the start and back again at the end.

The second is the flight that changes airport. Most international arrivals land in the south, and the north airport's flights are mostly domestic, many of them inter-island, so a trip that adds a few days on another island can mean making that crossing. Doing it in a hire car you were going to have anyway is free time rather than an extra journey.

The third is the city finish. Finishing the rental in Santa Cruz puts you in the capital with a morning to spare, thirteen minutes from the north airport and half an hour from Puerto de la Cruz, which is a better last day than an hour on the motorway back to where you started.

Does anything else change on a one-way?

Very little. The document rules do not move: the licence card in the main driver's name and in Latin script, with an expiry date no earlier than the end of the rental, with copies and electronic licences refused, and a physical embossed credit card in the same name where one is required. The deposit works the same way and is released the same way.

The rental period rules do not move either. Twenty-four hours is the minimum chargeable period, so a one-way that takes you a morning is still charged as a day. If you want to extend, you must inform the agent in advance, and that matters slightly more on a one-way than on a return, because the car is expected somewhere specific at a specific time.

One clause is worth reading if your plans are larger than this island. If you intend to travel outside the country, notify the rental agent in advance so the required documents can be completed. The Canaries are Spain, so a move between islands inside the archipelago is not what that clause is about; what it does ask is that you tell the agent before taking a car out of the country.

The return conditions travel with the car too: the fuel level it left with, a state that can actually be inspected, and the agent informed in advance of any extension rather than at the kerb. This is one rental with two addresses rather than two rentals stitched together, so what changes is the address on the voucher and the charge shown against the price on each listing.

Booking it, in the order the form asks

Start with the pick-up. The airport is selected by default because it is where most rentals here begin, and the delivery points sit underneath it. Choosing one moves you straight to the drop-off tab, which opens on same place, because most rentals end where they started.

The list of drop-offs is always there beneath it, and choosing a place from that list unticks same place. Every place offered there can be chosen independently of where you collected, which is what makes a one-way a single booking rather than two. Choose the one you want, add your dates, and search.
