Parking in Costa Adeje and driving a hire car in the south

What do the blue, white and yellow lines mean when parking in Costa Adeje?

Blue lines mark metered bays with a time limit. Unmarked white bays are free, and yellow lines mean no parking. These are the standard Spanish kerb markings, the same in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and El Medano as anywhere else in Spain.

A parking charge is the renter's to pay, and so is a fine for parking on a yellow line or overstaying a blue bay, because the rental conditions put parking and fines on the renter. Costa Adeje is a city-delivery point, so a car hired there is brought to the address you give in the town.

Where can I park in Los Cristianos, El Medano and at the airport?

In Los Cristianos, the car park on Calle Valle Menendez is covered and open 24 hours a day, every day of the week, with a maximum height of 2.2 metres. In El Medano, a modular car park with 180 spaces on Calle Isla Tenerife was due to start construction in September 2026.

At Tenerife South Airport, general car park P1 is a few metres from the terminal and open 24 hours, with 2.2 metres of headroom on its covered spaces. A hire car returned at the airport goes back in the arrival area, the named handover place there.

Where can I fill up in the south, and which stations open all night?

The Repsol on the access road to Tenerife South Airport, about 0.4 kilometres from the terminal, is open 24 hours, and so is the BP at Carretera Atogo km 0.5, on the TF-1 past the terminal at Tenerife South, about 1.5 kilometres to the north. In Costa Adeje, the BP at Siam Mall on Avenida Siam is open 24 hours, the DISA at San Eugenio is open from 08:00 to 17:30, and the TGAS Trebol station stands at the La Caleta and Adeje junction on the TF-1.

In Playa de las Americas, the BP at Avenida de los Pueblos 6 is open 24 hours, and in Los Cristianos so is the BP at Bulevar Chajofe 2. In El Medano, the TGAS on the TF-64 at km 7.7 is open 24 hours. Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf and Los Abrigos have no fuel station; the nearest cluster is at Las Chafiras, about three kilometres away. There is no fuel station inside Teide National Park.

The car is returned with the fuel level it had at pick-up. A lower level is charged at the rental company's rates, and a higher one is not compensated. Fuel in the Canary Islands carries neither Spanish VAT nor the state hydrocarbons excise; the islands levy their own fuel tax and IGIC instead, and fuel costs less here than on the Spanish mainland or in the United Kingdom.

Does the TF-1 have tolls or speed cameras?

It has no tolls, because Tenerife's motorways are toll-free. Fixed speed cameras operate on the TF-1 and the TF-5, including an average-speed pair, and a fine from one is the renter's to pay. The TF-1 runs past Tenerife South Airport and on to the La Caleta junction at Adeje, and in the other direction it meets the TF-5 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The drive from Costa Adeje to Tenerife South Airport is about thirty minutes and twenty-two kilometres without traffic. From Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas is about eight minutes and six kilometres, Los Cristianos about thirteen minutes and eight kilometres, Playa Paraiso about fourteen minutes and ten kilometres, and El Medano about twenty-one minutes and twenty-five kilometres.

From Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas is about ten minutes and four kilometres, El Medano about twenty-four minutes and Tenerife South Airport about thirty-three minutes. From Playa de las Americas, Costa Adeje is about ten minutes and El Medano about twenty-one minutes. From El Medano, Tenerife South Airport is about eighteen minutes and five kilometres, all without traffic.

Can I drive the Masca road?

Not between 09:00 and 16:00 while a fire-risk alert is declared, if the drive is purely recreational. During an alert the Cabildo de Tenerife controls access to the TF-436, the only road in and out of Masca, with control points at Las Lagunetas and Santiago del Teide and an information point at Los Pedregales. Residents, property owners, people travelling for work, public transport up to 7.5 metres, emergency and essential services and expressly authorised vehicles pass. The control is switched on and off with the risk and has no announced end date, so check before setting off.

From Costa Adeje, Masca village is about twenty-nine minutes and thirty-four kilometres, from Los Cristianos about thirty-six minutes and forty kilometres, and from Tenerife South Airport about fifty-eight minutes and fifty-two kilometres. Line 355 is the bus the Cabildo promotes as the alternative to driving in.

Since 15 May 2025 tour coaches in Teno have been limited to 10 metres and run one way, entering Masca from Buenavista on the TF-42 and leaving toward Santiago del Teide on the TF-436 and the TF-82. A car driving the TF-436 south travels with the coaches, and one driving north meets them. The TF-436 has narrow sections, and rental cars may travel on paved public roads only. The Barranco de Masca eco-tax applies to the walking route through the ravine, not to the road.

What has to be in the hire car, and what should I check at pick-up?

A connected V-16 beacon. Since 1 January 2026 it has replaced warning triangles on Spanish-registered vehicles, and every hire car on Tenerife is Spanish-registered. It is a small orange roof light that reports its position to the DGT, so a breakdown is signalled without walking along the hard shoulder. Not carrying an approved beacon, or carrying an unapproved one, is an eighty-euro fine.

Check that the beacon is in the car at the handover, whether that is in the arrival area at Tenerife South Airport or at the address a car is delivered to in a resort. Note the fuel level at the same moment, because the car goes back with that level. The driver shows the physical licence card, with its details in Latin script and an expiry date no earlier than the end of the rental; copies and electronic licences are not accepted.

Children of 135 centimetres and under must use an approved restraint suited to their weight and size, and as a general rule they travel in the rear seats. The front is allowed only when there are no rear seats, when every rear seat is taken by another child in a restraint, or when the restraints cannot all be fitted in the back. The fine is two hundred euros and three licence points for each unsecured child.

Only small pets may travel in rental cars, kept in their travel carriers at all times. Article 18.1 of the General Traffic Regulations also requires the driver to keep full freedom of movement, visibility and attention. A loose animal in the back of the car is a fine of eighty to two hundred euros, and an animal in the front passenger seat can reach five hundred euros, even inside a carrier.

Who pays a parking or speeding fine on a hire car?

The renter. Fuel, parking, fines and toll roads are the renter's responsibility under the rental conditions for the whole rental period. The minimum chargeable period is 24 hours, and extending the rental means telling the rental agent in advance.

Rental cars may travel on paved public roads only, which rules out unpaved tracks anywhere on the island. At the standard level of car hire insurance at Tenerife South Airport, damage to the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior is excluded, and the higher levels are offered and priced on each car. After an insured event, the rental agent must be told immediately and a police report obtained, unless otherwise agreed with the agent. Damage from intentional vandalism or neglect makes the insurance invalid.

One-way car hire at Tenerife South Airport starts at one pick-up point and ends at another, and the one-way fee is shown with the price on each car. With Tenerife South Airport at one end, the most one-way cars are listed for Tenerife North Airport, then Playa de las Americas and Puerto de la Cruz, and a car picked up in Puerto de la Cruz and driven south can be returned in the arrival area at the airport.

Every place on the list of places a car can be handed over can be a pick-up point. Golf del Sur and Guía de Isora can be a pick-up but not a one-way drop-off. A car returned so dirty that it hinders its inspection is washed at the customer's expense.
