Will my driving licence be accepted?

You need a valid national driving licence with its details duplicated in Latin script, and its expiry date must fall no earlier than the end of the rental. That last part is easy to overlook on a licence you have not looked at in years, and it is checked.

Copies are not accepted, and neither are electronic licences. That is the sentence worth reading twice if your licence lives in an app at home: it is not treated as equivalent here. Bring the physical card. A photograph of it on your phone is a copy, and a copy is not a licence.

If your licence is valid only in the country that issued it, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended and may be asked for on the day. A United Kingdom photocard is in Latin script and is not limited to the United Kingdom, so on the face of the condition it does not need one. If you are not certain which category yours falls into, an International Driving Permit settles it before you travel.

Do I need a credit card?

Renting may require a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name. Where a supplier accepts a debit card instead, it has to be physical, personalised and embossed in that same name, and whether yours qualifies is stated during booking and repeated on the voucher rather than decided at the kerb. How much the deposit is, how it is taken and how long the refund takes are all shown before you pay anything, and they vary by supplier rather than being one rule.

The third piece is the phone number you give when booking. It has to carry the correct country code and be reachable the day before pick-up and throughout the rental, and that is a condition of the rental rather than a nicety: service complaints are not accepted where the renter could not be reached by phone or messenger. In a city delivery this is how the meeting point gets adjusted when a street turns out to be closed.

One thing that is the renter's responsibility rather than the supplier's: fuel, parking and fines. Tenerife has no toll roads at all, so on this island that clause means parking and speed. Santa Cruz has approved a low-emission zone, but it takes effect in 2029, so it is not something a visitor driving here now has to plan around.

Parking and fuel in the city

In the centre, the underground and multi-storey car parks are the sane option for a day. The Intercambiador beneath the bus and tram interchange holds over fourteen hundred spaces and is the obvious one if you are heading into the centre on foot afterwards. It is where the buses and the tram meet, so it is also the easiest to find. On the street, the Spanish colour code applies exactly as it does everywhere else: blue metered with a time limit, unmarked white free, yellow no parking.

For fuel there is a BP on Avenida Tres de Mayo, open from early morning until late evening, and a DISA at Ortega y Gasset which is open around the clock, both near where the TF-1 and TF-5 meet. That junction is worth knowing anyway, because it is where every drive out of the city starts.

Anaga, and the rest of the island from the capital

Anaga is the reason to have a car here. Las Teresitas, the imported-sand beach the city actually uses, is fifteen minutes. Taganana, over the ridge and down the far side, is twenty-five, and the road to it is a sequence of hairpins through laurel forest that feels a great deal longer than the distance. One specific warning: the El Bailadero tunnel on the TF-134 is three hundred and seventy-five metres and unlit, and you will meet it after a stretch of bright ridge, so slow before rather than inside.

Puerto de la Cruz is twenty-eight minutes away on the motorway that runs along the north, and car hire in Puerto de la Cruz is handed over there at named points as well as delivered to an address. The fifty-eight minutes back to the south airport is the case for booking a trip that starts down there one way. Landing in the south, driving the island and giving the car back here turns the long crossing into something that happens once, and Santa Cruz can be chosen as a drop-off with the charge shown alongside the price.

The capital is also well placed for flying. Tenerife North is thirteen minutes up the hill, which makes the north terminal the sensible airport for anybody based here. El Portillo, and the crater beyond it, is fifty-two minutes. The south airport is fifty-eight.
