Can I pick up in the south and drop off here?

Yes, and it is the arrangement with the deepest supply on Tenerife: the choice between the two airports is several times wider than for any other pairing on the island. That is worth knowing because one-way availability is normally the thing that quietly fails, where you choose a drop-off and the list of cars collapses. Between these two it does not.

The one-way charge is shown with the price on each car, so you see what each car costs for the pairing as you compare, rather than working anything out afterwards. The mechanics are simple in the search: choose Tenerife South as the pick-up, untick the same-place option, and choose the north airport as the drop-off. A drop at the north airport is also the version that saves the most time, because the drive between the two is an hour and five minutes and seventy-three kilometres coming north, all of it motorway, and doing it once instead of twice is a morning back.

The terminal, the car park and the cloud

Los Rodeos sits at six hundred and thirty-three metres, up on the saddle between La Laguna and the north coast, and that altitude is the whole character of the place. Cloud sits on it. A morning that is clear and hot in the south can be grey and wet here at the same hour, and noticeably cooler.

The general car park is a minute from the terminal, open around the clock, with 2.1 metres of headroom, which is lower than the southern airport's and worth checking if you have booked something tall. There is a long-stay car park four minutes away with 4.5 metres of clearance and prior booking required. For fuel, PCAN on the TF-152, the Carretera General del Norte, is about four hundred metres from the terminal and open all day and night, which is close enough that topping the tank back to the level you got it is a stop rather than a plan.

The split that followed the southern terminal's opening is still the shape of the island's flying. The south became mostly international; the north kept a mostly domestic mix, close to half of it inter-island. That is why a car hired at this airport is so often the second half of a trip rather than the first, and why the deepest one-way arrangement on Tenerife is the pair of airports rather than any pair of towns: the choice between the two terminals is several times wider than for any resort pairing, in both directions.

What the north airport puts you next to

La Laguna is nine minutes away and is the island's old capital, a UNESCO-listed grid of colonial streets a long way from the southern resorts. Santa Cruz is thirteen, so the drop into Santa Cruz from a flight here is barely a drive at all. Puerto de la Cruz is twenty-six minutes down the hill, and the named points in Puerto de la Cruz make it the one town on the island where you can name the exact meeting place in advance.

For the mountain, El Portillo, the northern gate to the Teide crater, is forty-six minutes through pine forest, and it is a considerably better drive than the southern approach even though the southern one is shorter from the other airport. Anaga is the other direction and worth the day: Taganana is thirty-six minutes.

The southern resorts are the long way round. Costa Adeje is sixty-one minutes and eighty-five kilometres, and the south airport is sixty-four minutes, which is why a holiday split between the two coasts is a genuinely good reason to hire one way rather than driving the island twice.

Do the same document rules apply at this airport?

The document rules do not change with the airport. The licence card itself in the main driver's name, in Latin script, with an expiry date no earlier than the end of the rental, and copies and electronic licences are not accepted. A physical embossed credit card in that same name may be mandatory, and where a debit card is taken instead it must also be physical, personalised and embossed. Minimum driver age and minimum experience are set per car rather than per airport, and the agent may decline at handover if the driver does not meet the requirement for that particular vehicle.
