What does the agent actually check when they hand it over?

At handover you need the driving licence and the payment card. The licence must be a valid national licence with its details in Latin script, and its expiry date must be no earlier than the end of the rental. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. If the licence is valid only in the country that issued it, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended and may be requested. The rental may require a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name, and where a debit card is accepted it must also be physical, personalised, embossed and in that name. The deposit hold, the deposit refund timeline and the payment method for the rest of the rental are shown during booking and on the voucher.

Since 1 January 2026, every Spanish-registered vehicle must carry an approved, connected V-16 beacon instead of warning triangles. The V-16 is a small orange roof light that reports its position to the DGT, the Spanish traffic authority, so a breakdown can be signalled without walking along the hard shoulder. Every hire car on Tenerife is Spanish-registered. The fine for not carrying an approved beacon, or for carrying an unapproved one, is eighty euros.

Standard insurance does not cover damage to the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior of the car. The cover levels offered for each car, with a price for each level, are shown on the listing. Depending on the car, they range from third-party liability through CDW and SCDW to full CDW.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. The driver's minimum age and minimum driving experience are listed on each car's page, and they can differ even between similar models. The rental agent has the right to refuse the rental at any time if the driver's age or driving experience does not meet the requirement for that particular car.

The age and experience requirements are set per car and apply to whoever drives it. The driving licence must be a valid national licence with its details in Latin script. The main driver is the person whose name must be on the credit card.

If something happens to the car

If there is an insured event, notify the rental agent immediately and obtain a police report, unless otherwise agreed with the agent. Failing to do either cancels the insurance issued for the car and makes you fully responsible. The insurance is also invalid where damage comes from intentional vandalism or from neglect.

The phone number given at booking, with the correct country code, must be reachable throughout the rental and on the day before pick-up. Service quality claims are not accepted if the renter could not be reached by phone or by Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. To extend the rental, inform the rental agent in advance. Payment for fuel, parking, fines and toll roads during the rental is the renter's responsibility.

Parking, fuel and the roads out

Parking in Playa de las Americas follows the Spanish colour code: blue lines are metered bays with a time limit, unmarked white bays are free and yellow lines mean no parking. The BP at Avenida de los Pueblos 6 is open 24 hours. At the Adeje end of the strip, the BP at Siam Mall is open 24 hours and the DISA at San Eugenio is open from 08:00 to 17:30.

Los Cristianos is eleven minutes and four kilometres from Playa de las Americas, and car hire in Los Cristianos is delivered to an address in that town. Los Gigantes is thirty minutes, the Parador in the Teide crater is fifty-one minutes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is fifty-four and Puerto de la Cruz is seventy-two. El Medano is twenty-one minutes, and Masca village is thirty-two minutes on the TF-436, which is under daytime access control while a fire-risk alert is declared. Tenerife South Airport is thirty minutes and nineteen kilometres on the TF-1, and the drive down from the airport to Costa Adeje uses the same motorway.

The covered car park on Calle Valle Menendez in Los Cristianos has a 2.2 metre height limit, and the covered spaces in car park P1 at Tenerife South Airport also have 2.2 metres of headroom. Among the featured models, the Fiat 500, Kia Picanto and Toyota Aygo X have four seats, and the other small cars and crossovers have five. Automatics are a minority of the list and sit in the compact, crossover and SUV classes; economy models at Tenerife South Airport have manual gearboxes. Seven-seat and nine-seat models such as the DFSK 580, Volkswagen Caddy and Renault Trafic are listed but few.

A car collected at Tenerife South Airport can be left in Playa de las Americas, and a car collected here can be left at another pick-up point wherever the search offers that pairing. Any one-way charge is shown with the price on each car. One-way cars from Playa de las Americas are also listed to Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast. Golf del Sur and Guía de Isora cannot be chosen as a drop-off. Tenerife North Airport is sixty-one minutes and eighty-four kilometres from Playa de las Americas. If you book car hire in Golf del Sur, the car is delivered to your address there and must be returned in the same resort.
