What happens if something goes wrong during the rental?

The obligations run both ways and yours are specific. If there is an insured event, you notify the rental agent immediately and you obtain a police report, unless the agent agrees otherwise with you. Missing either of those cancels the insurance issued for the car and leaves you fully responsible, which is the worst outcome available to you and entirely avoidable. Insurance is also void for damage caused by intentional vandalism or by neglect.

For that to work at all, they have to be able to reach you. The contact number given at booking, with the right country code, must be available the day before pick-up and throughout the rental, and service quality claims are not accepted where the renter could not be contacted by phone or by messenger. In a place like this one, where a delivery meeting point might be an apartment block gate rather than a street address, that number is doing real work on the first morning as well as in an emergency.

The practical version: keep the rental agent's contact details somewhere you can reach without the car, make sure you can take calls, including from Spain, on the phone number you gave when booking, and treat a scraped wheel in a hotel car park the same way you would treat anything on the road. Call first, paperwork second.

Can I keep the car longer than I booked?

Yes, but the rental agent has to be informed in advance rather than told at the return. That is a condition of the rental rather than a courtesy, and what it asks is that the agent is informed of an extension in advance.

The opposite direction is easier. Many cars carry free cancellation, and how many do at any moment is shown on the listings, because it moves as stock changes. If your plans are genuinely uncertain, that filter is worth more than any promise a website could make.

The other end of the same question is the minimum. The shortest chargeable period is twenty-four hours, counted in whole days, so a car taken out for a morning costs a day, and two short hires cost two handovers as well as two minimums. On a quiet base like this one that usually argues for keeping the car for the whole stay rather than taking it out twice, and the car is on the doorstep either way.

Taking a dog with you

Two separate rules apply and both of them matter. The rental condition is that only small pets travel, and that they stay in their carriers throughout. The road rule is broader: article 18.1 of the general traffic regulations requires the driver to keep full freedom of movement, visibility and attention, so an animal has to be restrained, whether by carrier, an anchored harness or a cabin partition.

The penalties are worth knowing before you improvise. Loose in the back runs from eighty to two hundred euros. In the front passenger seat it can reach five hundred, and that is true even inside a carrier, because the carrier itself is then in the wrong place. The back of the car with the carrier secured is the only arrangement that satisfies both rules at once.

What is actually within reach

Fourteen minutes gets you to the wider choice at Costa Adeje of restaurants and shops and fifteen to Playa de las Americas, so the whole restaurant and nightlife side of the coast is a short drive rather than a taxi decision. Los Cristianos and its ferry port are twenty. Going the other way, the cliffs are twenty-seven minutes north at Los Gigantes, where car hire in Los Gigantes is brought to an address under them, and Masca village is twenty-five minutes when the road in is open, which it is not always.

Two of those drives carry a condition. Hire cars are permitted on paved public roads only, which rules out the tracks branching off the Teno roads above Los Gigantes and the ones that make the best photographs on the way to Masca. The Masca access road has a control of its own: checkpoints at Las Lagunetas and Santiago del Teide, running from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon whenever a fire-risk alert is declared. It is a conditional scheme rather than a fixed season, so it is worth checking on the morning you plan to go rather than trusting a date written on a page.
